Today’s Citywide Cleanup was hugely successful.
We had a turnout of approximately 400 volunteers.
We’ll be counting up the number of bags of litter that were gathered, but consider this – each person was encouraged to pick up at least two bags.
Many, many individuals went above and beyond, sometimes hauling in 4, 6, even 9 bags at a shot. Some groups brought in 15 to 25 bags over the four hour period. Truckloads!
Teams from churches, girl scouts, boy scouts, learn and serve, and businesses descended on neighborhoods long in need of attention.
Union Street, Park Street, Cleveland Avenue, and playgrounds around the whole of Amsterdam were just a few of the sites that were reclaimed.
Many commented that they went around the City to places they had intended to clean, only to find they were already cleared.
I am humbled by the
participation of all of these proud, committed, enthusiastic volunteers that have decided to take back their City. We’re going to do this again. Stay tuned for more. It’s what “small city. big heart.” is all about.
Yea for Amsterdam! Don’t listen to the grumpy old men that think they will run Amsterdam again. Stay positive and positive things happen. People care and people want positive change, thanks for all that you do. Thanks to all the volunteers. Keep up the good work.
Thank God Amsterdam never got that dump.
Dear Mayor Thane,
What a great turn out today! YEAH!!!! We had a blast cleaning today and by the looks of the photos, so did everyone else that turned out to pitch in. Congratulations on the first ever city wide “community” clean up. You are the BEST! Our beautiful city never looked so good, and it is all thanks to you. I am deeply touched by just how much you care about Amsterdam. We definitely elected the right person for office this time. Keep up the fabulous work – we all sincerely appreciate what you are doing for us.

The city men were nice enough to even take 2 mattresses and some old broken chairs we found in an abandoned lot. Along with about a dozen bags of debris.
By the way, the lazagna dinner was awesome! We got there at 12 noon, sat at the bar, and enjoyed a great meal!
My one big peeve: smokers who toss their butts just anywhere at all when they’re done with the cigarette. What a filthy dirty habit. I wish they’d be a little more considerate.
Congratulations Mayor Thane…what an awesome response!
People taking pride again in Amsterdam…wonderful! Hopefully even more was accomplished..perhaps young people participating will also take to heart the message that we want our home area to look great!
I would like to thank Mayor Ann Thane for showing leadership and organizing a great city cleanup. It was a great day and with continued support, Amsterdam will be a better place. Thank you Mayor Thane.
Yorkers could learn so MUCH from your city.
Ya know the job of Mayor is up for grabs……
hhhmmmm… Mom would probably want me to go for it…
nah, I will stay in healthcare.
I will just send your link to our mayor.
Good job for the people of Amsterdam!
We picked up 3.4 TONS of refuse!
God bless you all! A.
